There's no better time to experience
British Columbia's wetlands
than on a hot summer day.
DeBoville Slough Wetlands in Port
Coquitlam is a perfect place
to inhale the sights, sounds
and smells of what summer opens
up to our senses.
No doubt it's hot in British Columbia right now.
27 C translates to 81 F.
For us British Colombian's that's a tad warmish.
The humidity makes for some dramatic
cloud formations in the afternoons.
The water becomes stiller than still making
it a better than perfect mirror.
The lazy buzz and chirp of the insects
combines with the smells of summers
ripening fruits and berries.
The hot grasses sway and rustle in the slight breezes that
caress their way through the wetlands.

Truly a rich world enfolding before us.

Best Places to See in BC - Port Coquitlam

A nice stroll along
the dikes in Port Coquitlam
on a hot summer day is
surely a time for reflection and
contemplation. The weather is hot and sultry
here right now making the clouds heavy and
dramatic. I'm always expecting to see
a bolt or two of lightning come streaking out of
the darker grey ones.
The birds and bees sounds lazy in this weather, offering up
a few chirps and buzzes to fill in the spaces between quiet moments.

Bears are seemingly everywhere trying to stock
up on the blueberries and cherries that are ripe and
lush in the fields.

British Columbia is a true sensory delight.

DeBoville Slough, Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada

DeBoville Slough in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia
is just one of those places you instantly
feel a unique bond with.
In any weather, the place
is stunningly beautiful.
Wildlife abounds,
and the river is
ever present and ever changing.
Sometimes the worst
weather is the best time
to go and experience
the whims of
Mother Nature.
She is always sure to please
the most fussy photographer.

Crystal Falls, British Columbia, Canada

The trail along upper Coquitlam River
in Port Coquitlam, B.C.
wanders amongst large
fir trees, a symphony
of birdsong, and the soothing
sounds of river water.
It's an easy 45 minute
hike to the falls, which tumbles
and splashes its way to
join nearby Coquitlam River.
The falls are actually part of
Pritchett Creek, and if you can
manage the mountain goat like
clamber up the hill besides the main falls,
you will be delighted to find 2 smaller falls.
I'm not sure if the smaller ones have
names. I decided to name them
Peace and Serenity respectively.
Well worth the time spent to get here,
Crystal Falls represents a closeness
to Mother Nature in the midst of the
rush and hub bub of the city.

DeBoville Slough to Pitt River, Port Coquitlam, BC, Canada

I took a walk along the Traboulay PoCo Trail
in Port Coquitlam, B.C. Canada
and was treated to some soul soothing scenery.
The Traboulay Trail is 25 kms long, and
encircles the city of Port Coquitlam.
I haven't discovered all of her secret spots
and vistas yet, but I think that is
a project I can take my time and
work on.
I've been discovering a lot of things lately,
and maybe life is making more sense
to me. Like the trails and vistas I visit,
secrets and wisdom come over time,
its nothing you can rush. You
need to go back and listen
at different times, different seasons,
to hear all the truths revealed slowly.
Every season has its own version
of enlightenment.

For Derek Mata, my friend, my life mentor.
Thank you for your wisdom
and insights. You were taken from
life too early, and I, among many,
will miss you.

I needed to get out and bond with Mother Nature today. Too much indoor time can drive you a bit stir crazy after a few days. But that's life in Vancouver, you end up going out in the rain, or you don't go out at all.

I am still trying to connect all the various dikes and trails in the lower mainland of Vancouver together in my mind.

DeBoville Slough empties into the Pitt River. It's part of the Traboulay PoCo Trail, in Port Coquitlam, B.C. Its an urban treasure, with lots of wildlife and some pretty dynamic scenery.

I actually like the moody, rainy skies and the threat of rain. It adds some intrigue to photos that would otherwise be the usual scenery shots. I ended up going past the end of the trail and hiking partways up a mountain. With no one else around, I felt I have touched nature again, even in a small, urban way. But the threat of rain was real, so reluctantly, I returned to the land of eagles eyeing the salmon spawning in small streams, ospreys napping in hunchbacked trees, and ducks paddling their days away doing duck things.

I am renewed.
